Your internet may look fine until the moment it matters: a job interview freezes in the spare room, the kids keep streaming in the lounge, and a speed test on your phone still says the plan is “fast enough”. That is the giveaway. The connection coming into the house may be okay, while the last few metres from router to device are falling apart.
In many Australian homes, especially double-brick places, apartments with crowded neighbouring networks, long terraces, or newer builds with the NBN box tucked in a cupboard or garage, Wi-Fi is doing a harder job than people realise. Ethernet is not glamorous, and it will not make a slow NBN plan magically fast. But for calls, gaming, working from home, uploads and anything that hates dropouts, a cable can be the cheapest way to turn a fragile setup into a dependable one.
What Ethernet Actually Improves
Ethernet improves the connection between your device and your router. That sounds small, but it is often where the trouble lives. Wi-Fi has to deal with distance, walls, interference, neighbouring networks, device limits and signal quality. Ethernet avoids most of that by giving the device a direct wired path.
The main benefits are consistency, lower latency and fewer random dips. Your maximum download speed may not change much if your Wi-Fi is already strong. The point is that the connection becomes less jumpy. That matters more than headline speed for many everyday tasks.

For work-from-home, Ethernet is most worth it when your calls are important and your desk is not moving. A USB-C dock with Ethernet, or a simple Ethernet adaptor, can turn a flaky spare-bedroom setup into something much more dependable. This is especially true if the router is only one room away but the signal has to cross brick, mirrors, appliances or built-in cabinetry.
For gaming, Ethernet helps because games care about timing. A fast Wi-Fi speed test does not prove your connection will behave well during a match. Wi-Fi can deliver high speeds and still produce short latency spikes. Those spikes are what make the game feel wrong: shots registering late, rubber-banding, delayed inputs, or sudden disconnects.

What Ethernet Will Not Fix

The simplest test is temporary and ugly: run a long Ethernet cable from the router to the problem device for a day. Do not install anything yet. Just test the real activity that annoys you.
- Compare wired and Wi-Fi speed: run a speed test on the same device over Wi-Fi, then plug in Ethernet and run it again near the same time. If wired is much steadier or faster, your Wi-Fi path is likely the weak point.
- Watch ping stability: use a game’s network display, a router app, or a simple ping test while the problem is happening. Random spikes matter more than a single good average result.
- Test the actual room: join a normal work video call from the same desk, play the same game at the same time of day, or stream on the same TV while others are online.
- Check the router location: if the NBN box and router are in a garage, cupboard, metal cabinet, laundry, or far end of the home, the location itself may be the bottleneck.
- Move only one variable: if possible, test the device near the router on Wi-Fi, then from the usual room. A big difference points to distance, walls or interference.
If the problem mostly disappears on Ethernet, your Wi-Fi path is the likely culprit. If the problem remains while wired, look at the router, NBN connection, provider, device, work VPN, or the service you are using.
Practical Ways To Add Ethernet
The cleanest option is proper cabling: Ethernet wall ports from the router location to key rooms. For owners, this is usually the best long-term answer if you have a fixed home office, gaming setup or media room. Use a registered cabler for in-wall network cabling in Australia. Do not run permanent data cabling through walls or ceilings as a DIY job.
For renters or temporary setups, a visible cable can be fine if it is placed safely. A flat Ethernet cable along a skirting board, under a rug edge where it will not be crushed, or around a doorway with removable clips can solve a real problem cheaply. Treat powerline as a trial, not a guarantee. It may be better than weak Wi-Fi in one house and worse in another. If you use it, plug units directly into wall sockets where possible, not into overloaded power boards, and test it with the actual device and activity you care about.

What To Stop Guessing About
A few common fixes sound easier than cabling, but they are only useful if they address the actual bottleneck. Buying the fastest router will not remove thick walls or rescue a bad router location. Changing Wi-Fi channels can help, but crowded apartment blocks can remain crowded. Moving from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz is often faster nearby, but can be worse through distance and walls.
Be cautious with extenders as well. They can spread coverage, but may add delay or reduce consistency if poorly placed. Upgrading the NBN plan first only helps if plan speed is the limit. If your wired speed is fine but Wi-Fi collapses in one room, paying for a faster plan is unlikely to fix that room.
A Sensible Setup
A good home network is usually mixed: Ethernet for things that sit still, Wi-Fi for things that move. You do not need to cable every device. You only need to remove the unreliable wireless hop from the activities where reliability matters.
Use at least Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable for typical home runs. Keep cable lengths sensible, avoid damaged or extremely cheap mystery cables, and make sure you are plugging into the router or a network switch, not an old device with slower ports if speed matters. The practical order is simple: test with a temporary cable, compare wired performance against Wi-Fi, check for ping spikes, and look hard at where the NBN box and router sit in the home. If Ethernet fixes the problem, make the cable path cleaner. If it does not, you have ruled out Wi-Fi and can focus on the router, NBN service, provider, device or app causing the trouble.
